Healthy ageing and elderly care: staying safe, active, and independent

Healthy ageing is not only the absence of disease. The goal is to preserve mobility, thinking, communication, daily function, safety, and the ability to do what matters to the older person.

Useful routine review

  • Review every prescription, over-the-counter medicine, and supplement; avoid stopping or adding medicines without advice
  • Discuss falls, dizziness, balance, walking difficulty, vision, hearing, and home hazards
  • Check weight trend, appetite, chewing or swallowing difficulty, hydration, and nutrition
  • Mention changes in memory, mood, sleep, bladder or bowel control, and ability to manage daily activities
  • Review vaccinations and control of diabetes, blood pressure, heart, lung, kidney, and bone health

Support independence and reduce falls

  • Stay active with strength and balance exercises suited to individual ability
  • Use adequate lighting, remove loose rugs and clutter, add handrails where needed, and wear secure footwear
  • Use spectacles, hearing aids, walking aids, and other supports correctly when prescribed
  • Maintain regular meals, adequate protein and fluids as individually appropriate, and address dental problems
  • Encourage social connection, meaningful activity, and timely support for caregivers

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent care for sudden confusion, new facial droop or limb weakness, difficulty speaking, chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, a seizure, a fall with head injury, inability to stand or walk after a fall, uncontrolled bleeding, or a rapid decline in alertness or function.
